The smaller the apartment, the more effort will have to be made in its planning and interior design. Designers rarely do projects for a small apartment, and their owners are forced to create their own interior design. So, what techniques in planning and facing will help you to make the apartment visually more spacious?
1. Think about the proportions of the interior
The most important thing in the interior is to set the right volume. At the proportional to the height of the ceiling, the area of the premises, even in small apartments, allows you to create a beautiful and harmonious space. The higher the ceiling, the larger the room can be. With a small ceiling height, do not make a studio apartment. This will not increase the area but only emphasize the low ceilings.
2. Create a composition center
There should be a composition center in each room of the apartment. Add one very large object to a small room. It will attract the eye and distract from the size of the room. In the bathroom, it can be, for example, a large lamp, in a small bedroom – a panel at the head of the bed.
3. Use the principle of symmetry
Symmetrical composition is a reliable way to balance the space. Even tiny rooms with this technique can be made beautiful and respectable: thanks to the symmetry a small room will not seem cramped or crowded with furniture. But do not get carried away: it is not necessary to build similar compositions on each wall – it is tedious and boring.
4. Alternate filled space and empty
Leave one wall or part of the wall empty so that the eye can rest on it. At the same time, emptiness can also be a compositional center.
5. Paint the walls in adjacent rooms in one color
This will visually unite the rooms, and the apartment will seem more spacious. The same floor works in the whole apartment in the same way. If you paint the ceiling and walls in one color, it steals the line of transition between them, thereby visually increasing the height of the room.
6. Draw contrasting edges on the ceiling
Edgings draw attention to the ceiling, increasing the height, and highlight it in an additional plane. Visually, space expands as the gaze is directed upwards. When the ceiling is inactive, we just do not notice it, it falls out of our field of attention, and it narrows the space.
7. Use tall mirrors
Located near or in front of doorways and windows, they create the illusion of more rooms in the apartment.
8. Hide cabinets in niches and make them the same color as the walls
This dissolves the cabinets in space. Ideally, when your guests don’t see where your storage systems are at all. It is very bad when the giants sliding door wardrobe is the main “decoration” of the interior, it is impossible not to notice it. The closet can be left visible only if it is a worthy antique.
9. Determine the number, size, and shape of objects
Leave only what you need. Get rid of unnecessary items mercilessly. Choose round shapes: the fewer sharp corners in small rooms – the better.
10. Use transparent objects and glossy surfaces
This helps not to overload the space while maintaining functionality. Light-reflecting surfaces fill the space with air and freshness.
11. Combine different textures in one room
This will make the space more interesting and emotionally rich. There are few items in a small room, so it is important to follow the principle of texture contrast. Otherwise, you risk getting a very boring monotonous space.
12. Make a glossy floor instead of glossy ceilings
Contrary to popular belief, stretch glossy ceilings do not seem higher. With low ceilings, a glossy floor works much better. Due to the fact that the walls are reflected on the floor, the height of the room becomes unobvious.
13. Create storage spaces above eye level
This technique allows you to find additional resources for storage but does not overload a small apartment. What is above eye level, we tend not to notice, so the room seems more spacious. But these places are only suitable for things that you rarely use.
14. Do not demolish all the walls
Corners and corridors make the apartment deeper, create a feeling of larger than in fact, the size of the apartment. The studios look good when they occupy large areas.
15. Give up some familiar items
If you have a store near your home, store food in the store’s refrigerators, not in your kitchen. So you can put a small, built-in under the table instead of a large refrigerator. Experience shows that such a refrigerator is enough for a family of two or three people. If you use an electric kettle, try replacing the 4-burner hob with a 2-burner hob. This will allocate more workspace in the kitchen.
